Firefighter and former Marine Jackson Wilder has tough guy down to an art, but he’s learned the hard way that promises were made to be broken. Abigail Morgan was once his best friend, his first kiss, his first love, his first everything. He’d just forgotten to mention all that to her and she blew out of his life. Five years later, she’s back and he’s battling a load of mistrust for her disappearing act. But for some reason he just can’t keep his lips—or his hands—to himself.

When her stint as a trophy wife abruptly ends, Abby returns home to Sweet, Texas, and comes face-to-face with Jackson—her biggest and sexiest mistake. Time and distance did nothing to squash her love for the act-first-think-later stubborn hunk of a man, and when he suggests they renew their old just-friends vow, Abby realizes she wants more. She’d cut and run once. Could she do it again? Or could she tempt him enough to break his promise?

Sweetest Mistake is the first Candis Terry book that I read, courtesy of Crystal. Unfortunately, the first book in the series wasn’t available at the library in audiobook format so I went with the second book. It also helped that this is a second chance friends to lovers romance. And I absolutely love those!

As a note, reading the second book did not ruin the first book’s plot for me. We do see them in this book but no spoilers are revealed.

But where do I start?

Abigail Morgan left 5 years ago while Jackson Wilder was still in the marines. Now, she is divorced and back in town to sell her parent’s house. Now, as with small towns, everyone knows her. So naturally, Jackson KNOWS that she is back and he is dreading running into her. When they finally meet up, sparks immediately fly and both are trying not to fall for each other.

Now here’s what bothered me about this. Jackson Wilder and Abigail both married and divorced different people. Jackson, on the other hand, has a 3 (?) year old and Fiona his ex-wife is still present in his life. Which really bothered me A LOT. Now, I know this situation happens in real life but STILL. Plus, Abby and Fiona were already becoming buddy-buddy? Awkward.

Or maybe I am just reading more into this? Plus, Fiona and Jackson’s friend had the beginnings of attraction which was another AWKWARD situation.

So, as much as I wanted to love Abby and Jackson’s romance, it was tainted by the ex.

The secondary characters really interested me, though. Jesse Wilder is really intriguing and I can’t wait to read his own HEA.

The audiobook was read by Xe Sands and it was done really well. The slight Texas accent used didn’t distract me from the story. Her pacing was perfect, too!

Overall, I liked Candis Terry’s tone and writing style. It was fresh and it kept me interested. This is a more lighthearted small town romance than I am used to with a little less sizzle in the sexy times as I like.

Although I will not be binge reading (or listening) to Candis Terry’s backlist books, I will continue to look into the other books in this series.

One of my favorite books is A Rogue by Any Other Name by Sarah MacLean so I decided that this would be the first book Crysta will be reading! Stop by her blog today at Crystal Blogs Books because she will be sharing her thoughts on this book! Of course, she said that she loved it, because how could you not fall in love with Bourne?!

I know this may happen in real life, but I want to know your thoughts about books where characters are CLOSE friends with the ex-wife, ex-husband, ex-boyfriend, ex-girlfriend? Does it bother you or do you just chalk it up as reality?

I honestly couldn’t get past this, so it really ruined the story for me.

About Candis Terry

Growing up in Southern California, I was too busy reading books, hanging out at the beach, or finding ways to have a good time that wouldn’t land me on restriction to even consider writing a book. Oddly enough, a college drama teacher (who politely discouraged my inept acting abilities) encouraged me to develop the A+ character bio I’d created into a complete story. Right. Years later, in the midst of a bleary-eyed all-nighter (rocking my newborn, that is), I picked up a romance novel and fell in love with more than just the infant in my arms.
