The One Genre that I Gave Up On

Let’s talk about anything bookish!

Last week, I shared my habit of hopping from one genre to another. Now, I wanted to share my thoughts on genres that I actually have given up on.

I really gave this topic a lot of thought because I wasn’t really sure if I had one. But I actually realized that I DO have one genre that I don’t read and it’s Mystery! And I don’t mean romantic mysteries.

So, I used to read a lot of Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys growing up so the private eye mysteries were one of my favorites! At one point in my life, I wanted to become a private investigator!

Sadly, though, this is one genre that I haven’t revisited in over 20 years. I have fond memories of reading about Nancy Drew’s adventures. My favorite book of the series is the first one: The Mystery of the Old Clock. This was not the first book that I read, but this is the one that I remember the most.

Sure, I have probably read mystery romances, but I haven’t cracked open a Nancy Drew novel in a long, long time. Probably around the time when I started reading romance.

This is not to say that I don’t like the genre. I LOVE mystery and detective movies (Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, anyone?), but I just lost interest in reading them.

I have probably read a few romances with mysteries but I have not read full on mystery novels.

Do you have genres that you have given up on? Share your reasons why!

  1. I pretty much read mostly contemporaries, and of that, most are contemporary romances. When I started reading again, I was mostly reading my daughter’s books, so a lot of dystopians and paranormals. I still read them every once and a while, but I found I enjoy contemporaries the most. I have to say though, I have read a few good mysteries lately. I finished Dangerous Girls on Saturday and it was pretty ah-mazing.
