One summer night, Edward Alcott gives in to temptation and kisses Lady Julia Kenney in a dark garden. However, the passion she stirs within him is best left in the shadows as she weds his twin, the Earl of Greyling. But when tragedy strikes, to honor the vow he makes to his dying brother, Edward must pretend to be Greyling until the countess delivers her babe.
After her husband returns from a two-month sojourn, Julia finds him changed. Bolder, more daring, and more wicked—even if he does limit their encounters to kisses. With each passing day, she falls more deeply in love.
For Edward the embers of desire sparked on that long-ago night are quickly rekindled. He yearns to be her husband in truth. But if she discovers his ruse, she will despise him—and English law prevents him from marrying his brother’s widow. Yet he must dare to risk everything and reveal his secrets if he is to truly take all.

I honestly don’t know what to say here.  I mean, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE LORRAINE HEATH and I wanted to love this book so much BUT…..!!!

Here’s the deal, how can a wife NOT tell the difference between her husband and his twin.  A TWIN THAT SHE HATES?!

loki-giphy

I am fortunate to know TWO sets of TWINS and I CAN tell them apart!  I swear!  The first set, I’m pretty close to, the other not much, but we had two sets of twins in our level and we COULD TELL THEM APART!  Now, a wife, on the other hand, CAN’T?!  I’m just flabbergasted.  More so, because this wife claimed to LOVE her husband.

I remember Stranger in My Arms by Lisa Kleypas (that I absolutely ADORE) and it was sort of like this, wife falling in love with another man pretending to be her husband BUT in this case, said husband was EVIL and it had been a number of years since the husband had perished and the wife wasn’t even close to him at all.  TOTALLY UNDERSTANDABLE.

In The Husband Trap by Tracy Anne Warren, Violet marries her twins’ betrothed by changing places with her twin BUT the Duke of Raeburn doesn’t really know Violet or her twin, Jeannette.  However, once Violet’s identity is revealed, there is a scene where the twins switch places again BUT THIS TIME, the Duke KNEW who his wife is and that the twins did a switcheroo.

This is not to say that the story doesn’t have merit.  IT DOES!  It is actually a very well written, classic Lorraine Heath (and I absolutely adore her writing!) and I have loved her books with plots that are sooo out there (e.g. Waking Up with the Duke).  I mean, if ONLY the twin thing wasn’t as problematic.  *sigh

Romance wise, it wasn’t my favorite.  I’m not even sure if I recommend it to you, dear bookworms.  BUT if you are a fan of Lorraine Heath, you can give The Earl Takes All a try and let me know your thoughts.

What do you think about spouses who do NOT recognize their own partner especially if their spouse has a twin?

If you are in a relationship with someone who has a twin, do you think my thoughts are legit?  Can you tell them apart?  I truly want to know!

About Lorraine Heath

Lorraine Heath always dreamed of being a writer. After graduating from the University of Texas, she wrote training manuals and computer code, but something was always missing. After reading a romance novel, she not only became hooked on the genre, but quickly realized what her writing lacked: rebels, scoundrels, and rogues. She’s been writing about them ever since. Her work has been recognized with numerous industry awards, including RWA’s RITA® and a Romantic Times Career Achievement Award. Her novels have appeared on the USA Today and New York Times best-seller lists.

    • I TOTALLY agree, Nick. So even though it was swoon worthy and written well, the thought of the twin taking his brother’s place just didn’t sound romantic to me. Plus the wife not recognizing the difference between her husband’s twin? A twin she absolutely loathes? *shudder*
